HEBS – the Himalayan English Boarding School

HEBS was completed by Dawa Geljen Sherpa in early April of 2015. Immediately, 100 students from all over the Mt. Everest region of Nepal enrolled, some from villages over a 3-day walk away.

Not only did education give these children hope, it also began to stem the tide of language and cultural extinction among the Sherpa (and the other Tibetan peoples) in the high-Himalayan region of Nepal.

Help us rebuild our school from the ashes of the May, 2015 earthquake.

Establishment of the first Himalayan Pen Pal Program at the Lukla Government School

Through SherpaCares, these three sponsors donated the necessary equipment and laptop computers to launch the first Himalayan Pen Pal Program in the computer lab at the Lukla village school. Students’ literacy rates and their ability to converse in English sky-rocketed.

Disabled Porter Co-Op

Through SherpaCares, Carl and Mike sponsor a co-operative in Kathmandu, Nepal for disabled porters. Our goal is to help them find gainful employment in other areas. Porters, who were once the backbone of mountaineering expeditions, are able to establish new roles for themselves raising healthy, educated families.

Sherpa Kul Bahadur Rai, an expedition porter, lost his toes to frostbite. Sherpa Performance Guides was able to provide financial assistance, and demonstrate that a small amount of money can do a lot of good in Nepal.

Establishment of the Literacy Lab in Lukla

Through SherpaCares, these two sponsors donated the necessary equipment and computer laptops to launch the first Literacy Lab, which allows students from a small village near Mt. Everest, to send emails to new friends in California.

Khorhola Literacy Classroom

SherpaCares is building two computer language labs in the villages of Khorhola and Sarkinast in Nepal. The goal is to teach residents how to read and write in Nepali, the national language.

Orchid Garden Nepal

Day care is not a new concept for working parents around the world, but at Orchid Gardens, free daycare is being provided for the children of the poorest and most desperate class, the laborers. This program is revolutionary.

Punarbal AIDS Orphange and School

These orphans are thriving, learning, and getting the nurturing they deserve from the Punarbal Orphanage and School.

The MiresBall Forest

MiresBall, a design company in San Diego, cares.

Through SherpaCares, MiresBall sponsored a reforestation project that planted 16,000 saplings in Sano-Gomala village. Today, the forest is thriving, used as a model for similar projects across Nepal.

Syangma Bridge Project

Sherpa Performance Guides cares.

They sponsored the construction of a 300-foot suspension bridge for villagers of Sewangma to better access the local market and medical clinic. It was also a sturdy shortcut for children to reach school, increasing enrollment by 92%.

Sowing the Roots for Diabetes Specialists

Nadine and Luka Bradbury of San Diego, CA care. Through SherpaCares, they sponsor 16-year-old Namuna, studying to become a Community Medical Assistant. As the first Diabetes Specialist in her district and a Type I diabetic herself, Namuna will soon teach others to treat a condition she knows well.
